It is the only Duchy that sometimes is devolved into the titles of the King or Queen themselves if no heir is apparent; all other Duchies usually remain in their original hands or the hands of a trusted ally until a suitable replacement can be found. It is considered bad practice for both the monarch and the Duke of Bastonia to ever be absent from Bastonia simultaneously; if the King were to die while the Duke is absent this almost always results in a war of succession.
