'''Deepburn'' is a disease afflicting those who handle [[Darkcoal]] or traffic regions of [[The Deeps]] which are rich in the mineral without taking proper precautions. The disease is progressive - short exposures may have no effect whatsoever or lead to the development of cancer, and longer exposures may cause violent illness, ultimately fatal within days. While preventatives exist there is no known cure for the disease apart from supportive treatment, and even then in the more severe cases even this is not possible, though miraculous restoration has happened.

Famously, the dwarven god [[Torserd Magnusson]] contracted the disease and sealed himself in the great chasm below the [[Temple of the Deep]] in [[Khaz Duersterkrak]]. As he is immortal it is believed that the disease changed his mindset and physique significantly without killing him - his followers continue to commune with him, after all. Some mad followers of Torserd contract the disease on purpose in an attempt to be more alike to him.
