As a chivalric order in the [[Bastonia | Bastonian]] system of knighthoods, they perform important paramilitary and religious functions throughout Zeemarch and oftentimes points abroad. Founded shortly after the accession of San Marino to the status of a [[Bastonian Pantheon | Great Saint]], the order is somewhat atypical in that it has a seaborne focus not unlike the related [[Arcwhalers]].

The commanding officer of the Vaulters is known as its Auditor General and is elected from the surviving ranking officers on the death or retirement of their predecessor. The Auditor General, together with all other officers in the order, owes fealty to the [[Duke of Zeemarch]] in traditional recognition of the close relationship between [[San Marino]] and the city of [[Oversea]].

The blazon of the Sacred Order is ''Or, A Chevron Gules'', which were at one point the personal arms of San Marino at the time he was a mortal man. As most of the high ranking officers within the order are nobility in their own right, rather than a supplemented blazon they earn the right to wear their personal arms impaled with the order's arms upon promotion.

The Sacred order of the Vault borrows the distinction of their personnel into companies formed of squadrons from other troops, and they maintain bases of operations in every port city in Bastonia, the chiefs of those being [[Southport]], [[Coldwater]], and of course [[Oversea]] itself - as well as a small company near [[Whiterock]] at [[Goldbar]]. These positions form the nodes of a sea and road network of trade, and it's the escort of critical trade convoys or the transfer of wealth in coin or bullion from one city to another that make up most of their campaigns.

The Sacred Order have a relaxed reputation compared to other Knights, and many in the populace see them as corruptible if not truly avaricious - some even find referring to them as a "sacred" order profane given that the bulk of their concern is in acquiring and protecting wealth. Nevertheless, the Sacred Order are frequently asked by other Chivalric Orders to loan their expert delvers to assist with the evaluation and exploration of ancient ruins and other treasure caches.
