The Great Collapse is a historical event that brought about the end of the unified republic of Petrenea in the Shimmering Shores. The result of an unexpected planar convergence, the Great Collapse came about when a sudden outbreak of unpredictable Wild Portals disgorged large numbers of often hostile Outsiders into the Shimmering Shores.
As the convergence is still ongoing, the various cities that once comprised the Republic do not have the resources to continue imperial governance, and have devolved into conflict, both with the enemy and with one another.
