The Via Mandatum is one of the nine vias, or "ways", of mages in the Ars Magicka - a subset of the school's formalized magical theories. The Via Mandatum is the "way of command", the study of evoking and directing raw elemental power, and the direct conversion of raw Source into specific elemental forces, a process known as "colouring". Battlemages, such as those in the Scholarly Order of the Azurjay or the Legio Camus, or any number of other organizations, are very often most familiar with this via. The via is responsible for one of the most common magical effects a non-magician might think of: the fireball.
