The title of Emperor, usually fully styled as the Golden Sun Emperor, is a political position in the Atarlie Empire. The title is both one of poltical executive power and of religious significance in the religion of the empire, as it was originally held by Rophalin Imperitor. The position is hereditary in practice, but the original imperial house has fractured into competing houses, and from time to time shifts in political power lead to unexpected successions (both in timing and direction).

The title holds nominally-absolute power, but in practice, the purse strings and logistics of the empire are heavily influenced by the Imperial Senate. As a result, there is an uneasy power balance between the Imperial Family. Senate confirmation is also required for a claimant to the the Imperial Throne.
