The Southern Campaign was a campaign of the Imperial Legion launched in relatively recent history, shortly after the annexation of the Hearthlands as a protectorate of the elves. The Elves initiated the conflict by solidifying their border alongside the Hearthlands before attempting to push their influence south, across what is now thought of as the Atarlie Frontier in order to ultimately besiege the city of Xarthekei, inviting war with the Republic of Petrenea. The war effort was complicated by the unexpected involvement of the dwarves of Clan Balippasson, who harassed the columns of the Imperial Legion who passed through the Frontier, and then the counter-attacking force from the Republic when the dwarven harassment allowed them to break the siege.
After the events of the Great Collapse, and the subsequent Fall of the Petrenean Republic, there was no longer a capacity for warfare on the side of the southern faction, and the city-state centered around the the new Xarthekei government sued for peace with the Empire, who themselves sued for peace with the dwarves, establishing the current border along the Great River of Stars.
