The Dutchy of Sudmarch is one of the five duchies which make up the Kingdom of Bastonia, established in 1643 Age of Bastion by King Eldrech V to formalling bring the Frontier Counties under the control of the House of Baston and to make them formally part of the kingdom. Eldrech placed his third son, Benedict Lukas Henry as the first duke and established the ducal seat as Val Verra.

The establishment of the duchy as a formal territory lead to the build up and "Bastonianization" of the Frontier Counties, which up until then had been loosely-organized human communities in the Lordless Lands. As a consequence, this lead to the Southern Expansion and all the conflicts which followed.
