Hearthland Seperatism is a recurring phenomonen affecting the political climate of The Hearthlands throughout the entire Age of the Summer of Mortals. The defining cause of a hearthland seperatist movement is independence of the Hearthlands from the Atarlie Empire, of which the Herthlands is a protectorate. However, not all separatist movements are created equal: some are additionally revolutionary against the Parliament itself, others seek to create separate halfling and gnomish nations. Most movements are semi-secret societies which claim ancient lineages, sometimes desiring to restore pre-protectorate political structures like the Gnomish Courts or to restore Halfling Nomadism to prominance. Others are newer, academic-driven groups, wishing to test new mechanisms of governance and economics.

Grievances - and popularity of these movements - vary depending on the vagaries of the Atarlie Senate. Such movements are especially popular during times of crop failure or when the Empire goes to war, as in both situations the tribute system (and territorial serfdom) become especially onerous. Conversely, at times of great fertility or when the Empire is at peace and minding its own internal affairs, seperatism is often seen as an idealistic folly.

While none of these movements have been successful, Hearthland Rebellions occasionally pop up and require Atarlie intervention to put back down.
