The North

The North is a Duchy in Bastonia. Its border is best defined by its southernmost holdings, but crudely defined as that bordered by an arc drawn through the Unseelie Tower in the west, Castle Pontrainne in the south, and the mouth of the River Torres in the east. This province comprises all lands north of such a line, and enjoys good trade with peoples on the other side of the Atlas Mountains, like the Atarlie Empire and their protectorate in the Hearthlands. While seen by some as remote, this region is rich in lumber and accessible mineral deposits. Largely self-sufficient, The North also plays host to Coldwater, a fortified port city which is the primary port of call for Atarlie traders and home to the Arcwhalers. Isolated from attack, the hardscrabble citizenry of the North have really only the beasts of the wild to deal with, making the North a particularly safe holding for its nobility. The Duke of the North is fourth in precedence with regard to claims to the Bastonian Crown.

The Duke's principal holding, the city of Boischateau, takes second place in the minds of the rest of Bastonia to its richer and more northerly cousin, Coldwater. While his worship is in a state of questionable legality, the North is known to be home to an unusually large number of the followers of San Elijah, especially in its east, where Carcolie raids continue.
