Right Honourable Companions of the Engineer
The Stonewall Knights, rendered fully as the Right Honourable Companions of the Engineer, are a Chivalric Order headquartered at Crucible Rock, though they are found anywhere fortifications are in need of construction, especially the Frontier Counties. As a chivalric order in the Bastonian system of knighthoods, they perform important paramilitary and religious functions throughout the kingdom, and have a history as old as their cousin-order, the Militant Order of San Lukas, which is unsurprising given that the hagiography places their own patron, San Heather, as a contemporary (and indeed, spouse) to San Lukas. The Stonewall Knights have the mission and obligation to maintain unmaintained fortifications and establish new castles, walls, and other constructions in support of the defense of the realm.
The commanding officer of the Stonewall Knights is known as its Knight Grand Cross and is appointed upon vacancy by the spouse of the current reigning monarch, who is the liege of the order.
The blazon of the Stonewall Knights is Gules party per bend sinister azure. High Ranking Officers, especially those who have been knighted, are further entitled to an additional blazon: 'Gules party per bend sinister azure, a castle.
Individual companies of the Stonewall knights occupy disrepair or under-construction fortifications and protect the location of those fortifications until they are fully constructed and serviceable, manning those positions until relieved by either secular garrisons or other chivalric orders. Even the company headquarters is not considered truly permanent and they have only recently occupied Crucible Rock. In particular, they have a rivalry with the Order of the Lanyard, whose fortifications they have taken partial responsibility for, and sympathy for the Companions of the Light; were it not for the Southward Expansion, the Stonewall Knights would likely muster with the Companions in order to retake and rebuild the Seelie Ruins in the disputed Hinterlands between Zeemarch and The North.
