Runecrafting

Runecrafting is the traditional form of arcane magical theory taught and adhered to by the Clans of Magnus, the proud dwarven kings of the Atlas Mountains. The style is based on an ancient runic language known as the First Runes, created by Magnus Allfather and gifted to the use of his son Yurir Magnusson, a god in his own right who expanded the language and formalized the first systems by which they could be used by mortals. The style of magic is markedly different from the Ars Magica practiced by elven and human mages, focused on the creation of enchanted items and with a heavy reliance on the ability of the spellcaster to memorize and pronounce correctly passages written in ancient runic alphabets markedly different from their native tongue.
Since the runes themselves contain the magic it is markedly easier to identify magic items that are the product of Runecrafting, though for obvious reasons the dwarves have also developed manners of craft that can hide or obscure the runes from easy viewing. Where Ars Magica relies heavily on Arcwhale Oil, Runecrafters instead move through vast quantities of a peculiar reagent known as Runic Dykem, a specialty dye produced at great expense.
