The Dire Rooks are a species of enormous corvids native to the northern Atlas Mountains, in whose rearing and training the Carcolie are considered experts. Dire rooks are, like all birds of their clade, highly intelligent, with some even capable of not merely mimicking, but understanding the speech of mortals. They are of such great size that they can bear a rider and light burden, and the carcolie use this extensively in their culture to provide overwatch and scouts for their migration and light cavalry for their skirmishes with the men of Estmarch and the dwarves of Northreach.
