Navarre's Crossing

Navarre's Crossing is a large town in the Atarlie Frontier, situated on land between the two tributaries of the Great River of Stars, which forms the border between the Atarlie Empire and the Shimmering Shore. The city is home to a prodigious garrison of Imperial Legion troops. Its position is seen as somewhat tenuous; it is an expensive holding and does not guard any critical passages other than the headwaters of the Great River, though some in the Senate argue it could be used to guard a road that links the empire with Baghar if the elves were to take that city.

Geography

The rivers to the north and south are considered easily forded, and where they join off to the east of the town is a large landing that is used for trade with South Point. The road the passes the fords is the main overland route through the frontier to the Shimmering Shore, though this road is considered dangerous once you cross the southern ford. It is occasionally travelled by scholars from Heroka and their adventuring parties, owing to the path the road takes near the Great Rift, one of the most lasting remnants of the Great Collapse.

The town is in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. Though it is hardened by elven standards and garrisoned by the Legion, it is frequently raided through these mountains, and counts among it many enemies - bandit outlaws of the Clans of Magnus and followers of Xia Leng (who has a major temple somewhere in those mountains) occasionally harass the town in pursuit of their own agendas.

Economy

Navarre's Crossing essentially operates at a loss, its every financial concern ultimately provided for via Imperial funding and the Legion's budget for material aquisitions. There are few who live in the town that are not attached to the legion in some way, and the road north and river east both serve to ferry much needed materiel into the city.

Politics

Navarre's Crossing is a military jurisdiction under martial law enforced by whichever officers of the Legion are present at the time.
